Tuckman's Team Development Model - Further Developments

In the final article in this series on Tuckman's model of team development we take a closer look at further developments proposed to the original model.

Adjourning

Tuckman developed his theory of the four stages of team development – forming, storming, norming and performing in the 1960’s; however, in the 1970’s he added a fifth phase: adjourning.

Forming – Norming – Storming – Performing - Adjourning

This stage involves completing the task and disbanding the team. Several activities may take place including the final delivery of the project outputs, reporting to stakeholders, returning unused resources, reviewing project, team and team leader performance and thanking and rewarding team members. Others have referred to this phase as mourning and, indeed, particularly where a team has performed well team members can experience a feeling of anti-climax at the closure stage.

David McClelland - Achievement Motivation

Over the years behavioural scientists have observed that some people have an intense need to achieve; others, perhaps the majority, do not seem to be as concerned about achievement. This phenomenon has fascinated David C. McClelland and for over twenty years he and his associates at Harvard University studied this urge to achieve.

McClelland's research led him to believe that the need for achievement is a distinct human motive that can be distinguished from other needs. More importantly the achievement motive can be isolated and assessed in any group.
