Access Government Funding for Training and Development

Train to Gain is a government service aimed at helping employers in all sectors to develop and improve the skills of their staff. It delivers the ‘Leaders First’ programme that assists small and medium sized companies with training grants of up to £1,000 for management training and development.

Who is eligible?

Leaders First funding is available to organisations in the private, public and voluntary sectors with between 2 to 249 staff. Organisations that have not accessed previous Leadership and Management funding initiatives through the Learning and Skills Council are eligible. For each organisation one manager or decision-maker may benefit from the funding.

What is the funding for?

The funding is to pay for part or total cost of training or personal development activity for one manager or decision-maker in an eligible organisation. The training should be designed to help managers to develop and improve their management and leadership skills, communication skills, enhance staff motivation and productivity and understand their own strengths and weaknesses.

For example training might be to develop skills in: Management & Leadership, Building Effective Teams, Business Planning, Marketing, Advanced Negotiation, Communication Skills, Presentation Skills, Assertiveness, Handling Conflict in the Workplace or Time Management.

How much funding is available?

The first £500 funding is refunded in full and a further £500 funding is available on a matched £ for £ basis.

To Apply

Call or e-mail us today. We offer a wide range of management training courses and coaching and we will tailor any programme to meet your specific needs. When you are happy with our proposal and costs we will arrange for a local Business Link Adviser to contact you. The adviser will work with you to confirm your development needs and create a Personal Development Plan (PDP). They will also discuss solutions and offer to put you in touch with training providers; however, as the Business Link web site states “the adviser will then leave the final choice of training provider with, who else but, the key decision maker” – which means you. So, if you are happy with the proposal that we will have already agreed you will be free to request that we deliver the training. Finally, once you receive an Approval Letter for funding, the training must commence within 90 days of the date on the PDP.
