Expert Power.

In the penultimate article in our series on power and its uses we examine expert power. There is a popular perception among employees that the supervisor should have an adroit understanding of all facets of the operations within his or her area of responsibility. Subordinates who view their supervisor to be an expert will be more apt to be highly motivated and therefore be very productive.

Social Identity Theory.

Social Identity Theory was developed by Tajfel and Turner in 1979. The theory was originally developed to understand the psychological basis of inter-group discrimination. Tajfel et al (1971) attempted to identify the minimal conditions that would lead members of one group to discriminate in favour of the in-group to which they belonged and against another out-group.

We are pleased to announce that we have just completed a full update of our train the trainer training course.

We are pleased to announce that we have just completed a full update of our 'Train the Trainer' training course. To view the outline and objectives please click here.

It seems to have paid dividends. We recently ran this course for 6 people who have just been appointed as trainers for their organisation and you will find below some feedback from one of the delegates:

"I enjoyed the sections on personality traits as this gave me confidence in areas I originally thought were my weaknesses. Also identifying other peoples behaviours and how best to deal with people will be really useful not only in work in a trainer role but in all aspects of life where difficult people are! Also increased my confidence as a presenter and cleared up presentation of slides & handouts for me. Following the train the trainer course I went on the telephone skills & customer care course with yourselves. Some aspects overlapped, but I found this was good for me as it proved how much had sunk in as I was able to recall a lot of the information. This also gave me further confidence in dealing with similar difficult people but over the phone. David was a great trainer, he was relaxed at all times, never showed any signs of stress when people were being irritating and controlled the group well without it being obvious. Also as the courses are designed to be fun and David made us all laugh this helps to learn better and for info to stick in our minds. Thanks."

We are delighted to announce that we now have three RSS feeds available on our website:

Latest News

New Courses

Late Offers

To subscribe to any of our feeds all you need do is click on the RSS icon of your choice at the foot of each page of our website.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the concept of RSS feeds (most commonly expanded as "Really Simple Syndication") it is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works such as blog entries, news headlines, audio and video in a standardised format and viewed in different programs (readers) including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Outlook.

Users subscribe to a feed by clicking an RSS icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader then checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds and presents them to the subscriber in their reader of choice.

We hope you find them of use.

Train to Gain is a government service aimed at helping employers in all sectors to develop and improve the skills of their staff. It delivers the ‘Leaders First’ programme that assists small and medium sized companies with training grants of up to £1,000 for management training and development.
For each organisation one manager or decision-maker may benefit from the funding.

What is the funding for?

The funding is to pay for part or total cost of training or personal development activity for one manager or decision-maker in an eligible organisation.
For example training might be to develop skills in: Management & Leadership, Building Effective Teams, Business Planning, Marketing, Advanced Negotiation, Communication Skills, Presentation Skills, Assertiveness, Handling Conflict in the Workplace or Time Management.
To Apply

Call or e-mail us today. We offer a wide range of management training courses and coaching and we will tailor any programme to meet your specific needs. When you are happy with our proposal and costs we will arrange for a local Business Link Adviser to contact you. The adviser will work with you to confirm your development needs and create a Personal Development Plan (PDP). They will also discuss solutions and offer to put you in touch with training providers; however, as the Business Link web site states “the adviser will then leave the final choice of training provider with, who else but, the key decision maker” – which means you. So, if you are happy with the proposal that we will have already agreed you will be free to request that we deliver the training. Finally, once you receive an Approval Letter for funding, the training must commence within 90 days of the date on the PDP.
